Abstract

The study observed how two different ethnic (Chinese and Javanese buyers) react on language use reflected in terms of address when they made request to the Chinese and Javanese sellers when they do the transaction in a shoe shop. It focused on language use in terms of address, how different ethnics react on language codes use reflection in terms of address when they make request. The data were taken from recording the conversation between Chinese and Javanese buyers with Chinese and Javanese sellers. The source of data is from the conversation between Chinese and Javanese female buyers and Chinese and Javanese female sellers. The data were analyzed based on Poedjosoedarmo?s theory (1968) of Javanese language and Esther Kuntjara?s explanation about the use of terms of address and types of request strategy in general in her book titled "Gender, Bahasa dan Kekuasaan" (2003) . The findings showed that ethnicity and buyers? age influence people in using terms of address and the language use but it does not influence the use of request strategy.
