        Abstract

China early ancestors came to Indonesia, a country which was unfamiliar to them. To tighten relationship, have mutual care, promote of social welfare, develop industry and commerce, Chinese people established Chinese societies. A variety of factors led to the repeated occurrences of anti-Chinese movement in Indonesia. Since 1965, the Chinese communities were in a standstill condition until the collapse of the new order in 1998, the Chinese gradually gained back their rights. Chinese associations have re-opened their gates, the new Chinese communities were established everywhere. After more than ten years of reformation, the activities of Chinese communities were organized by people over sixty. Realizing the importance of taking over, the Chinese communities began to focus on training young people. This article made some analysis and discussion on this current situation, in order to understand the core issues faced by the Chinese communities in Surabaya. The interviews result showed that elderly community has to find out the needs of the younger generation, the language barrier was the biggest obstacle, so that these young people felt out of place, which caused them un-interested in Chinese community. Some strategies have been taken by the Hwie Tiauw Ka, in recent years, more and more young people began to organize various activities in the activity center. Their proactive participation has got appreciation from other Surabaya Chinese communities.
