Abstract

Chinese descent in Indonesia especially the third generation who stay in Java use Indonesian rather than their own languages: Mandarin, Hokkien, or Cantonese. In the use of the Indonesian language, particularly in Central and some parts of East Java, Chinese descent often insert the Javanese words. In this study, the writer conducts the investigation on the flow of the Javanese words used by Chinese descent in Indonesian in terms of their parts of speech, denotative meaning, and derivational construction. The informants are eight students of Petra University who come from different towns of East Java. In addition, they have stayed in Surabaya for almost four years. The data are collected by recording the conversations they make and making a transcription of the conversations. From the recording, the Javanese words, are identified with their parts of speech, denotative meaning as their use in Javanese and Indonesian, followed up with the analysis on their derivational constructions.
