Abstract

This present research is conducted to find out the types of persuasive phenomena which are produced by the main characters of Gossip Girl, named Serena van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, Nate Archibald, and Charles `Chuck? Bass. This research is aimed to seek the types of persuasive strategies and also participant as one of the social factor?s element by the four main characters. The writer mainly bases her research on the theories from Simmons (1976) and Holmes (2000). The types of persuasive strategies are co-active strategy and combative strategy. The element of social factors is participant which divided into gender, social status and social distance. The writer found that first, the most dominant persuasive strategy used by the four Gossip Girl?s main characters is Co-active strategy (68.42%) and classified into the most sub theory of Co-active strategy which are Emotional appeal (17.54%) and rational persuasion (36.84%). Moreover, Serena van der Woodsen produced the most dominant persuasive strategies, Co-active strategy (42.10%). Furthermore, the writer also identified the persuasive statement of the four Gossip Girl?s main characters related to participant as one of the social factors element. The result was social distance, intimacy as the most influential elements from participant as one of social factor.
