Abstract

This study is a study of the evil character of the main male character in Richardson's Clarissa. Through this study, the writer wants to know how Lovelace shows his evil character. She also wants to find out the factors that cause him to fail as well as how he changes his character. In trying to reveal Lovelace's evil character and to prove that Lovelace fails because of his mistake and of his changing his character, the writer wants to analyse his speeches and attitudes toward other characters as well as other character's opinion about him. From the discussion, the thesis writer finds out that the main male character, Lovelace, really has evil character. She also notices that the factors which cause him to fail is Clarissa's rejec-tion and determination to die because of his evil charac-ters in treating her. Thus, he cannot have Clarissa's love but he also fails in getting Clarissa to be his wife. This facts surprises him and makes him change his charac-ter. Finally, he dies tragically in the hope he can pay his crimes toward Clarissa.
