Abstract

The analysis in the thesis will be focused on the character flaws of the main characters that make Paul Morel fail to get married. In this thesis, the thesis writer uses literary theory. It concerns with the theory of characterization to find the significant flaws of the main characters. Theory of conflict is also used to find Paul's internal conflict in his relationship with his mother and also to show the struggle between Paul and his mother when he introduces his girlfriends. The thesis wrrter concludes that the main factor, which makes Paul fail to get married, is Paul's own character flaws. Paul is a dependent, insecure person, who has no strong motivation to maintain his relationship with his girlfriend. Moreover, there is an external factor that makes him fail to get married. It comes from Paul's dominant mother, Gertrude Morel's character flaws. She is an overprotective, jealous and egoist mother, who influences Paul's life and then makes him fail to get married.
