Abstract

Lancelot, one of Walker Percy's novel is a story which is used by Percy to deliver his thinking and opinion about post modem human being. Lancelot Andrewes Lamar, the main character of Walker Percy's Lancelot, is used by Percy to show his idea of post modern human being who lived in post modern world with its problems and influences and finally loses his self-identity. This thesis will analyze Lancelot's process from being a person who has certain status in society to a person who loses his identity and becomes a patient in a mental hospital. In analysing it, the thesis writer uses literary approach especially the theory of characterization. Besides, in order to have the right schemata the thesis writer also uses the theory of self-identity and the background of post modern world to analyze Lancelot and the factors that lead Lancelot to his loss of self-identity including his family problems and his reaction toward his problems. After analysing the topic, the thesis writer concludes that a person in Lancelot's position with his post modern background and family problems can lose his self-identity because he chooses to make a destructive and not constructive solution to solve his problems in which his decision deliver him to his dissatisfied, alienated and mad.
