Abstract

In closing the conflict, there are some different ways that participants might use One of the ways is called termination format. In serial short story, named Obrolan Santai there are some conflicts which involve its characters. The main characters, Bu As and Pak As, are involved in some conflicts, thus, some ways in handling the conflicts occur. In this thesis, the writer made a research on what termination formats are used by Bu As and Pak As and what factors influence Pak As and Bu As in using them. The purpose of the research is to find out whether there are some specific termination formats which Pak As and Bu As tend to use and whether the fact that the author is a male author who has his work published in women tabloid influence the power that he implements in his characters. In analyzing the data, the writer applies Vuchinich theory on basic termination format. The writer also applies Donohue and Kolt, Brown and Levinson, and Wilson and Putnam to support Vuchinich?s theory. From the analysis, the writer finds out that Pak As tends to submit to his wife, while Bu As tends to use stand off Besides the termination formats, the writer also analyses the factors that influence the use of termination formats. The writer figures out that, Bu As, as the Wife has got more power than her husband, Pak As. This is shown by the high frequency of Pak As submission.
