Abstract

This thesis is an analysis on depression in Thomas Hardy?s Jude the Obscure. The discussion deals with the life of the main character, Jude Fawley, in facing his depression. In the analysis, the thesis writer wants to know the causes and the effects of his depression are. The thesis writer uses the literary approach, applying the theories of setting, characterization, and conflict as tools. Besides, the thesis writer uses the psychological concept of depression to support the analysis. Through the analysis of Jude Fawley, the thesis writer finds out that rejection, failure in job and marriages, and also the loss of the children make Jude feel exhausted and disinterested with his life, so that he becomes much shaken by the bad realities and depressed. As the results of his depression he attempts to commit suicide, drinks alcoholic drink heavily, that finally leads to his bad health and death.
