Abstract

Dubliners is the title of Joyce's famous collection of fifteen short stories which tell about Joyce's family and relatives experiences during his life. The thesis writer is interested in choosing Dubliners, since through Joyce's experiences, she sees two different ways of Irish people in trying to achieve their purposes and get success. Therefore, the thesis writer is curious to find out how Dubliners get success with their purposes. Through the analysis, the thesis writer wants to find out each main character's action and attitude in their ways to achieve their purposes and also the effect on their life, using the theory of characterization to analyze the action and attitude of each main character and also the critics' opinions. Finally, the thesis writer concludes her findings that the main characters who achieve their purposes through their good and bad actions and attitudes can both get satisfaction at the end but the different is the main characters who achieve their purposes with bad actions fe el sad, empty, and also regretful.
