Abstract

Fences is a dramatic play by August Wilson, about the main character, Troy, who has the way to see his moment in the past and he wants to do in his future. This theme is reflected on the main character?s personality, which reveals an ideal family?s idea. Troy always does everything to his family by his own way that based on his experiences. For that reason, the writer is going to analyze the causes Troy failed to establish an ideal family. In order to accomplish the analysis, the writer uses literary approach, which characterization is to explain the main character?s traits. On top of it, besides utilizing literary approach, the writer also uses the concept of an ideal family to identify the effects of Troy?s failure in establishing an ideal family, especially in his relationship to his sons and his wife. At the end, the thesis writer concludes that there are several causes Troy fails in establishing an ideal family. It happens because he being a rude person, forcing his own ideal to his sons and being unrespectful to his wife. The result makes Troy fails in having a harmony family.
