Abstract

This thesis is a study which uses discourse analysis theory to analyze the conversation in SCTV program 'Dunia Bintang'. This study is trying to look for the violation which exists in that conversation, also it would like to explain the causes of that violation. the writer used the qualitative approach and the data were taken by recording from and cassette recorder. There are four conversation that will be analyzed by the writer. The interviewer in this program is Inggrid Wijanarko and the interviewees are Ita purnamasari, Prayudi, Andre Hehanusa, and the last Elma Theana. To be able to analyze that conversation the writer uses the theory of Conversational Principles by Paul Grice that is used to look for the violations and the theory of Politeness Principles by Geoffrey Leech to explain that violations. Besides those theories the writer also uses Searle's categories of illocutionary acts to help to categorize the Politeness Principle maxim. From this study it is found that the violations of conversational principles, especially the quantity maxim is important, that makes the conversation not monotonous.
