Abstract

This study is about the main character's alienation in Saul Bellow's Dangling Man. In this study, the writer analyses the cause of Joseph's alienation and the ways he alienates himself. In this study, the writer wants to prove that because of the dreams that he cannot reach in the reality, Joseph alienates himself. He alienates himself both from the society and even from himself. In analyzing the main character's alienation, the writer puts some theories. They are literary theories and the theory about alienation from some books. After analyzing the main character's alienation, the writer finds that the clash between Joseph's dreams and the disappointing reality which is full of conflicts make him distressed and finally cause his withdrawal from the society. He alienates himself from the society he lives in and when the thing is getting worse, he endures self alienation since he is strange to himself At last, Joseph who feels that he is nobody in his present environment, struggles to be somebody by choosing to join the army to go to the battlefield. The writer finds out that as Joseph fails to find his goal of life in his present environment, he tries to find it in other place.
