Abstract

This thesis concern with the study of expectations, hopes, and disappointments of a mother toward her daughter in Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. The discussion is about the understanding of the mother's background of life which brings her such expectations and hopes. Further, this thesis discusses the turning of the mother's expectations and hopes into disappointments through the conflicts between her daughter and herself. This thesis also discusses how they overcome the disappointments. Suyuan, as the mother, had a bad experience in China in a War Time. She had to abandon her twins girl babies because she thought that she would die soon. In fact, she was saved and brought to the United States. She called her new country, America, as the land of hopes. There fore, the pushes June: her other daughter in America, to do as her expectations and hopes. However, June failed and her failure brings disappointments to Suvuan. After being told by her father and her aunties in The Joy Luck Club, June knows t:hat the twin sisters and she are the 'Long Cherishes Wish' of Suyuan. Finally, June can feel more closer to Suyuan even though Suyuan had died.
