Abstract

This is a study about symbolism through the main characters in Orpheus Descending. In this study, the thesis writer is curious to know what the main characters symbolize and the meanings of the symbols in Tennessee Williams' Orpheus Descending. In anlyzing the subject matter, the writer uses library research to collect data and litterary approach to analyze and interprete the symbols. The story of Orpheus Descending is based on the history of Orpheus in the Greek Mythology. There, the author wants to talk about his idea of unfriendly world. In revealing his idea, the author uses some symbolism. In this study, the thesis writer wants to explain the symbols which is used by the author in revealing his ideas. In explaining the matter, the thesis writer separate her analysis by using the main characters of Jabe Torrance, Lady Torrance and Val Xavier. The final results are Jabe Torrance symbolizes death, Lady Torrance symbolizes human being, and Val Xavier symbolizes savior.
