Abstract

The thesis is a study of humanity of the main character in Graham Greene's Our Man in Havana. The thesis writer is curious to know how the main character's conflicts reveal his humanity. Furthermore, the thesis writer wants to know whether his humanity is only for those he loves or to his enemies. In the analysis, the thesis writer uses library research and analytical method through literary approach; the literary theories used are theory of characterization and conflicts. The analysis shows that at the beginning, Jim Wormold has his humanity before he is recruited as a spy until he becomes a spy. His work as a spy could not change his humanity toward strangers and his enemies besides people whom he loves. When he has conflicts, both external and internal conflicts, he is able to solve them even successfully reveals his humanity. From the discussion, the thesis writer concludes that the main character, Jim Wormold, is firm enough to bear all the conflicts in his life after he becomes a spy. He even can win over the bad circumstances and his humanity remains unshaken. This condition shows that througli the character of Jim Wormold, the humanity is revealed.
