Abstract

This thesis concerns with the study of moral evil which is explored from one of Henry James's works, namely The Wings of the Dove. This is to find out that moral evil can bring harmful thing as experienced by Kate Croy and Merton Densher in the story. By using literary approach through literary devices called characterization and conflict, the thesis writer wants to reveal whether moral evil influences Kate Croy's and Merton Densher's lives. And, through the analysis, it is found out that their character traits and conflicts can prove the existence of moral evil to Milly Theale yet Merton Densher can overcome his moral evil, at last. Actually, Milly's sacrifice has made Densher change into the awareness of good moral. And, Densher's good character traits also have helped him to overcome his moral evil. This is contrary to Kate Croy who keeps on committing moral evil in her life, supported by her materialistic and egoistic characters. This different view, in fact, has separated them forever. Moral evil, finally, can be found in Kate's and Densher's lives. And, true love which is shown by Milly has defeated Kate's and Densher's moral evil, at last.
