Abstract

No longer at Ease is basically a study of the ambiguities of Nigeria in the post colonial period where the old ways have changed, the traditional values have been turned upside down, but the full consequences of the coming of Europeans is not yet known. Chinua Achebe's No Longer at Ease pictured the main male character, Obi, a representative figure of the young and educated Nigerian at this point of time, that is pulled between the traditional and modern values in Nigeria. This writing examines the factors that bring Obi into the conflicts that finally lead him into his tragic downfalL hi order to accomplish the analysis, the writer mostly bases her study on the theory of confKcts. Setting, characterisation, and modern tragedy are the other literary devices that the writer is going to apply in analysing the novel. Through the analysis, the writer finds out mat the simultaneous and conflicting demands on Obi, as a main character, finally result in Obi's downfalL He finally meets his downfall that results from the conflicts of the clash between the modem and traditional values in Nigeria. The conflicts lead Obi to trial for accepting bribe can be seen in the beginning parts of No Longer at Ease where Obi is being arrested and put into a humiliating triaL
