Abstract

Anne Tyler is one of the great American writers. One of her novels, Earthly Possessions is the creation of her creative thinking. The novel is about the conflict that appears in Charlotte?s marriage as the major female figure which brings her to an absolute decision to leave her family. Charlotte feels unhappy with her life. She wants to gain the freedom as a house wife to view the outside world. She feels lonely in her home since her husband is very busy. Having no activity, Charlotte is interested to escape from her husband. Besides, Charlotte actually has three reasons that lead to her unhappy life. Firstly, Charlotte hopes that she can gain enough acknowledgement either from her own parents or from her surrounding, especially from her friends. Secondly, Charlotte longs to receive a motherly concern since her mother does not admit her as her own daughter. It makes Charlotte hopes for good figure of a mother and the love from a mother. The last one, Charlotte wants to gain freedom. She wants to feel the life outside her family. It leads Charlotte to make a decision to flee from her family. Thus, I can conclude that Charlotte feels unhappy with her life because of the three major reasons above.
