Abstract

This research is to find out the use of casual speech style that used by the male workers in "Sejahtera Motor" garage.the writer is curious to know about casual speech style because it is one of the types of speech that is used in daily interaction when the speaker is not paying attention to the choice of word and sentence structure. There are four characteristics of casual speech style; ellipsis, slang, swearword, and code mixing. All of them occasionally occur in informal background. In this research, the researcher wants to investigate about how are the characteristics of casual style used in male conversation. She uses some theories of style from Holmes (2001), Martin Joos (1976), Huddlestone (1976), Geertz (1959), Liedlich (1973). In collecting the data, the writer recorded the conversation in two days when the worker had a breaktime and then she transcribed it so that the writer could analyze it. Furthermore, the writer finds out that Ellipsis mostly occur in the workers conversation because it happens in context of relax situation. Additionally, trough this research the writer found that the workers commonly mix upJavanese code and English code.
