Abstract

This thesis concerns with a study about the five typical characters of Tennessee Williams: "The Artist", "The Insane", "The Cripple", "The Sexually Driven", and "The Foreigner". In his two plays The Glass Menagerie and Sweet Bird of Youth, some of the characters have the characteristics of Tennesee Williams typical characters. For this reason, the thesis writer is interested to analyze all of the characters that have qualifications of "The Artist", "The Insane", "The Cripple", "The Sexually Driven", and "The Foreinger". Therefore, this thesis intends to prove that the characters in both plays have those typical characters of Tennessee Williams. In addition, in order to make an analysis on the Tennessee Williams's typical characters the writer of this thesis will apply literary device namely theory of characterization. Furthermore, she will add the theory about the five typical characters of Tennessee Williams to support the analysis. In the analysis she finds that the characteristics of "The Artist" can be found in Tom Wingfield, Chance Wayne, Princess Kosmonopolis, and Boss Finley while "The Insane" can be found in Amanda Wingfield, Laura Wingfield, and Princes Kosmonopolis. The characters that can be classified as "The Cripple" are Amanda Wingfield, Laura Wingfield, Chance Wayne, Heavenly Finley, and Chance's mother. While those that can be classified as "The Sexually Driven" are Laura Wingfield, Chance Wayne, and Princess Kosmonopolis. The characters that can be said as "The Foreigner" are Jim O'Connor, Princess Kosmonopolis, and The Heckler. From the analysis, the thesis writer learns that both in The Glass Menagerie and Sweet Bird of Youth have the five typical characters of Tennessee Williams.
