This paper deals with Arabella?s motivation in Thomas Hardy?s Jude The Obscure, seen through two main figures Arabella Donn. As the thesis writer put Arabella Donn as main character, who is obsessed to get Jude?s love again even though Jude has already another lover, namely Sue Briedhead. Arabella is a very agrresive woman, but she has a nice heart and high responsibility. The objective of the study is to know what Arabella?s motivations to get Jude Fawley are. With the help of literary theory, literary devices of characterization and conflict and concept of motivation on the subject, the thesis writer tries to analyze the subject on the discussion. The analysis clarifies on Arabella?s desire to posses Jude. The thesis writer gives the background when she is seducing Jude to get him to marry her and when she has inner conflict with Sue. Her behavior is clearly seen on her behavior and attitude, that is she is never satisfied with her condition. My analysis will end with Arabella Donn?s seeking a man who will provide the comforts and love. Finally, in the conclusion the thesis writer concludes that Arabella is trying to be a nice woman toward Jude.
