Abstract

This paper seeks to find out the problems which cause seemingly successful family businesses suddenly forced to shutting down their business. To come up with the answer to this problem literature research on family businesses' life cycle had been done, in addition to finding out the common problems faced by family businesses in the course of their life and how to accurately measure the current position the family business' in. With these 3 theories, family businesses can identify themselves in which stage they're currently in, look up the problems associated with their current stage and try the proposed solution to these problems Though the result of this paper might not be suitable for generalization, an attempt to increase the representativeness of the result had been made. By choosing companies which operates in different countries (Surabaya, Hong Kong and New England) in different fields (merchandising company, exporting company and car selling business) of business, the bias caused by culture and business environment can be made minimal.
