The Alchemist is a novel written by a Brazilian author, Paulo Coelho. Using some poetic style in writing a novel, Coelho in this novel expresses his past struggle to reach his dream to become a novelist. The novel tells about a shepherd boy named Santiago who experiences strange dreams about finding the hidden treasure. The treasure hunt changes his personality. In this study, the thesis writer is interested in analyzing the development of the main character from a pessimistic to an optimistic person. In the analysis, the thesis writer uses the literary approach consisting of the theories of characterization and conflict. In addition, the thesis writer uses the concept of pessimism and optimism to support the theories. The thesis writer finds that in the beginning the main character was a pessimistic person who is doubtful and regretful. In the process of becoming an optimistic person, the main character gets enlightenment and love motivation from other characters. Because of the enlightenments and love, the main character can do his journey well and becomes an optimistic person. His characteristics as an optimistic are unwavering and confident.
