Abstract
St. Mikhael, the inculturative Catholic church, well known as the Pangururan Inculturative Catholic Church or Gereja Katolik Inkulturatif Pangururan (GKIP), located in Pangururan city, capital of regency Samosir, North Sumatera, an area inhabited by tribe Batak, especially Batak Toba. The facade and the design of the GKIP has the similarity with the façade and the design of Batak Toba’s traditional house. This paper aims to discuss the uniqueness of the church’s design with Peircian’s semiotics. The hope that this discussion will get the signification toward the relation of the signs by the simplest semiotics prosess, based on the relation between the representament and the object. The result of semiosis’s process emerge the relation among the signs in the form of icon, index and symbol. The icons has significant appear than indices and symbols. So, the conclusion is that the relation among the signs which appear in façade of GKIP, dominated by icons. The icons emerge by the similarity between the elements of façade GKIP (as a sign) which represents Catholic’s culture with Batak Toba’s culture, or vice versa.
