    Abstract

ABSTRACT Santo Mikael, the inculturative Catholic church, well known as the Pangururan Inculturative Catholic Church or Gereja Katolik Inkulturatif Pangururan (GKIP) located in the Parish of St. Mikael’s complex, Pangururan city, capital of regency Samosir, North Sumatera, an area inhabited by tribe Batak, especially Batak Toba people. This church has architecture and interior reflecting the blend of Batak Toba cultures and Catholic Church. Architecture and interior of GKIP, will be assessed by Ricoeur’s hermeneutical method to obtain its meaning, to consider this bulding as a text or set of signs that can be considered text. This method is performed in two stages, namely: (1) explanatory phase, carried out by examining static dimensions to obtain raw meaning, and (2) interpretation phase, carried out by examining the dynamic dimensions to obtain it is contextual meaning. Results explanation concludes that the architectural form of GKIP shows more similarities with “Ruma Batak Toba”, the Batak Toba’s traditional building, while the interior is more indicative of a Catholic Church. Interpretation of the results shows the current views of the functional role that brought the church in the context of personal function, social function and physical function, where the architecture and the interior of GKIP will become a new icon of Batak Toba’s culture. In the end, the whole meaning of GKIP represent an attitude of openness from Catholic Church to the cultural life of Batak Toba people, which potentially gave birth to a new conception of Catholic theology that is typical Batak Toba. In broader region, the existence of GKIP may be one indicator of driving the process becoming Indonesian in the Catholic Church, with the hope from the Catholic Church in Indonesia became the Indonesian Catholic Church.
