This thesis is about the effect of the generation gap in John Updike's The Poorhouse Fair. In this novel, the characters consist of two groups of people, namely a group of old people and young people. Between these two groups , there is a generation gap which is caused by a great difference of ages. It is widely known that the young generation hold different values and points of view from the old generation, this differences cause they have differences in expectation and perspectives. Consequently, these differences in expectation and perspectives cause many clashes of opinion and create many conflicts in the poorhouse. As a result this generation gap also has effects on the characters, the young people and the old people. They feel miserable living in the poorhouse. The thesis writer uses the theory of conflict and character in order to support the analysis. The purpose of writing this thesis is to reveal the effect of the generation gap between the old and the young generation. By this analysis , the writer wants to prove that the communication gap that happen between the generation will bring destruction for the characters.
