This thesis is about Hopkins' struggle to deal with desolation as seen through some of Hopkins' sonnets of desolation To analyze the struggle, the writer will discuss the desolation as well. The desolation is the speaker' condition of being lonely due to his separation from his beloved ones. It leads him to suffering, particularly mental suffering. In his suffering, the speaker has to struggle to deal with it. As the author is deeply religious person, the struggle cannot be apart from the author's belief. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the struggle of a deeply religious person. After analyzing the eight sonnets using the poetic devices and the elements of poetry, the thesis writer concludes that the sonnets express the hard struggles of a deep religious person to deal with desolation and suffering.
