Abstract

Making errors in language learning process cannot be avoided. It happens because second language learners are still developing their knowledge of language grammar. Grammar in a language is very important for second language learners in order to write and speak well since it deals with the rules of the language. Therefore, the writer wanted to find out the three English Department Korean students? writing 4 essays which they have submitted in their writing class. The writer analyzed several types of grammatical mistakes that the three Korean students produced. The theory of Corder and Ellis is used to define errors and mistakes as the essential part in learning the foreign language grammar. Other theory used is surface strategy taxonomy by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen. This theory classified type of grammatical mistakes as the writer used in analyzing the data. Then, the writer provided the correction of sentences by using table. At the end, the writer found out five types of grammatical mistakes in the three Korean students? writing essays (omission, addition, misformation, misordering, and haphazard substitution mistake). In conclusion, the writer thought that Korean students are still weak in basic grammar and they are not aware in doing their writings.
