Becky Sharp, the main character in William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair is from English low class society in Victorian period. Her life obviously is influenced by her ambition to enter the upper-class world and to gain much fortune. It is her ambition that makes the story interesting since in order to reach her ambition, she does not mind having hostility with other characters in the novel by making every effort including to have conflicts with them. Meanwhile, her qualities and the condition where she lives seem to contribute her ambition. Therefore, the writer of this thesis wants to find out the character traits wliich make Becky Sharp, a penniless orphan girl, reaches her ambition and to know what efforts Becky has in order to achieve her ambition. In discussing Becky's ambition, die thesis writer intends to prove that her character traits make her do any efforts in order to reach her ambition. The thesis writer hopes this study can give a better understanding about the authors from upper-class English society especially William M. Thackeray. Further, she expects the readers to see the result of Becky's ambition. The thesis writer uses literary approach to analyze Becky's ambition. By doing the analysis, she finds that Becky's character traits and the efforts she does, make her reach her goal.
