From all of literary works, the thesis writer prefers to choose novel to be studied. Dombey and Son, the first deeply considered plan of Dickens' novel, is the story of the downfall of a dignified and arrogant man and his learning of the power of love. This thesis analyzes what Mr. Dombey has done wrong and how he realizes his faults that brings a renewal in his life. Through the study of the novel, it shows Mr. Dombey's flaws through a character analysis and the process how they bring a renewal in his life. The methodology that is used is a library research. Characterization and conflict are the literary theories that are applied in the analysis. From the analysis, the thesis writer finds that Mr. Dombey's faults stem from his character flaws, that is arrogant, self-centered, unloving, obsessive materialistic, and obstinate. Having those character traits, Mr. Dombey get involved in conflicts with other characters. At the end of this thesis, the thesis writer concludes that Mr. Dombey's realization is greatly influenced by the bankruptcy of his firm. Because of that incident, Mr. Dombey realizes his faults and becomes a man who is thoughtful, silent, soft, unselfish, immaterial, loving, and calm.
