Abstract

This present research was conducted to find out the code mixing produced by the pastor in his sermon. This research is aimed to investigate the code mixing and also the linguistic elements that can be found in the code mixing produced by the Pastor in his sermon. The writer mainly based his research on the theories from Holmes (l992) and Wardhaugh (1986). This research used qualitative approach. The writer got the data from the utterances produced in the pastor?s sermon. The writer used five steps in analyzing the data. Firstly he observed the sermon utterances produced by the pastor by listening to and recording the utterances in mp3 format. Secondly, he chose the utterances that consisted of code mixing. Thirdly he, wrote down the data into table. The final step was to analyze the code mixing and find the linguistic elements of the code apart from Indonesian as the base code. After he analyzed the utterance from the pastor, he found several findings. The code mixing were Indonesia-English, Indonesia-Javanese, Indonesia-Javanese-English, Indonesia-Chinese, Indonesia-English- Chinese, and France-English. The linguistic elements found were word, phrase, and clause. In English the linguistic elements were word, phrase, and clause. In Javanese, the linguistic element was word. In Chinese the linguistic elements were word and phrase. In French the linguistic element was word only.
