Abstract

Rickie Elliot, the main character in E. M Forster's The Longest Journey, is a handicapped man who experiences a long and dark life. His life is tragic, full of sorrow and disappointment from he was born until he died. Through this study, the writer of this thesis wants to know the factors that lead Rickie to experience such a tragic life. In discussing Rickie's tragic life, the thesis writer intends to prove that there are external and internal factors that lead Rickie to experience a tragic life. The thesis writer hopes this study can give a better understanding about Forster's autobiographical novel to face life which is hard and difficult from Rickie's experience. The thesis writer uses literary approach to analyze Rickie's tragic life. By doing the analysis, she finds that people surround him, such as his father, mother, wife and his half-brother actually have to give him more love and affection, but instead they make him disappointed. Some of his character traits as a handicapped man, such as sensitiveness, being inferior and expecting too much from people he loves also make his life more tragic.
