This study investigates first utterances used by the male and female attendants and whether their first utterances standard and non-standard. The writer derives standard and non-standard from Kridalaksana's and Lumintaintang's et all characteristics. The subject of this study is ten males and ten females of Tavern Pub. This thesis uses qualitative approach because the writer attempts to obtain the data, which she gets from the natural setting. To collect the data, the writer records the first utterances used by the male and female attendants. Through the analysis, the writer finds out that the form of first utterances used by the male and female attendants can be an interrogative, imperative, exclamation, request, and greeting. Moreover, the sex differences influenced the language varieties they used whether standard and non-standard. In this case, the male attendants had more tendencies to use non-standard than standard Indonesian, while the female attendants tend to use standard than non-standard Indonesian.
