Abstract

Tortilla Flat is a novel by John Steinbeck. Tortilla Flat was tremendous success and was made into a popular film in 1943. This thesis is an analysis of human relationships in the novel of Tortilla Fiat. Generally friendship is built on the basis of similar interest, but Pillion and Danny have different character traits and undoubtedly their differences create conflict which makes Pilon change. Therefore, the thesis writer is curious to know how Pilon?s character traits develop and how the development leads him into a friendship with Danny. Through the analysis the thesis writer wants to reveal that Pilon?s experiences make his character develop and the development leads him into a friendship. In the analysis the thesis writer uses library research and literary approach with characterization and conflict as the device. At first Pilon is described as a miser, lazy, irresponsible, greedy, arrogant, and selfish, and these character traits lead him into conflict with Danny. Based on the result of the analysis, the thesis writer concludes that the conflicts make Pilon realize his faults. Through the analysis it can be concluded that conflict does not always bring a bad effect, Moreover, Pilon and Danny realize that they need each other, they forgive each other?s faults and they help each other. Nobody can live alone we always need others help. If people can understand what friend is in their live, they do not mind doing anything for their friends. Usually if a person has committed to be friend, they will do anything for his friend.
