The title of my thesis is "A Study of Marguerite?s Efforts to Overcoming Racism in Maya Angelou?s Autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." I want to analyze the racial problem in the black life in the America South, focusing on the experience of Maya Angelou?s experience about racial problem in her autobiographical I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. In this thesis, I analyze the main character?s effort in overcoming racism problem. I use literary approach with the literary devices of characterization and conflict, and some supporting theories on the black American concepts of beauty and racism. In the end of my analysis, I find that the main character success in overcoming her racism problem by having a career. As a conclusion, finally Maya can solve her problem and become a better person though racism problem still exist until she grows up.
