Abstract

Designing ESP Reading Material for Philosophy
The development of ESP has resulted in different EFL learning materials for different disciplines. However, ESP for Philosophy is still yet to be found to meet the demand of English reading skills in Philosophy, a field of challenging study for students of Philosophy. This paper is a further search of the previous action research on ESP for Philosophy, focusing on the material for Philosophy. The material design, following the learning-centered ESP, is of a wider-angled type of syllabus. Considering the nature of Philosophy, a preliminary study on the language used in Philosophy is used as a basis to design related scaffolding material to gear the students towards the target Philosophy reading. In addition, relevant theories on language learning and material development are considered in designing the material.
