Abstract

Typography is one of core subject for second year students of Visual Communication Design Department. As a core subject, that commonly studies about fonts (alphabets) as one element in graphic design. Typography in the second semester (Typography 2) focuses on exploring a new typeface using typical software and also applying it into an artwork, such as book cover, poster, print advertisement, etc. Usually, those artworks were only given just for in the class to evoke students skill and sense of art. Last year, Typography 2 applied Service-Learning on this class for the first time. Students were divided into several groups, and ordered to make banners for street vendors in Surabaya city.
With Service-Learning, students could apply theories gained from the class into the street vendor visual banner directly. Banners as design output of student Service-Learning project show the different characteristics from mostly street vendor banners, which have uniformity in visualization. The differences are on the aspects of styles of drawings or illustrations, colors, typefaces, layouts, and also type of banners materials. As the conclusion, this Service-Learning project supports visual variety to the street vendors design banners in Surabaya city.
