Abstract

This study aims to explore the potential use of discarded product packaging materials as faade components in architectural design. It responds to the growing demand for sustainability in architecture, where material selection plays a critical role. The research offers a scholarly contribution by proposing a novel approach to faade materiality, highlighting the innovative use of packaging waste as both expressive and functional design elementsdistinct from previous studies that primarily emphasize technical or conventional recycling aspects. The study investigates the relationship between waste, material, and design creativity through a qualitative approach using an exploratory case study method, illustrating how product packaging can be repurposed into inventive faade applications. Three case studies located in Indonesia, identified through a review of published design literature, reinforce the local context of recycled material implementation. The packaging materials are evaluated based on their physicalcharacteristics, supporting construction techniques, and their architectural function and role. The findings reveal the significant potential of using discarded packaging materials as architectural faades, particularly in reducing waste, enhancing environmental sustainability, and lowering construction costs. Furthermore, the study underscores the creative challenges and opportunities for architects in exploring and composing recycled materials. Considerations of material, geometry, and character emerge as key aspects of this materiality. The study suggests that the use of discarded packaging materials not only supports sustainability but also paves the way for innovation in design and creative construction within architecture.
