Abstract

The thesis writer studies the character traits of Julius King in A Fairly Honourable Defeat wh ich is written by iris Murdoch This study is aimed at understanding the life of the main character, Julius King who is symbotized as Satan. The writer of the thesis is challenged to aisalyze the character traits of Julius King in this novel to find out the reason why Julius is symbolized as Satan. By using theory of symbol, theory of characterization and the characteristics of Satan t he writer concludes that julius king is symbolized as Satan based on his evil character traits: Julius King deceit manipulation, and destruction. Furthermore, by studying the character in this novel, the thesis writer finds a lesson that what people say and do can be deceiving. It means that what people say and do are not always the same as their inner qualities.
