Abstract
A well designed green building and the proper use of green products may contribute significantly to enhancing the quality of life of building occupants and to decrease the use of energy in active building systems. In 2010, Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) has launched its “Certification Scheme for Green Building Products (SGBP)”, as part of its overall mission to develop a truly sustainable and environmentally-friendly built environment. The SGBP certification scheme complements the Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA) Green Mark Scheme in the assessment and certification of a green building. As the Green Mark scheme have significant impacts in driving the development of green buildings in Singapore and its regions, continuous renewal is needed. The objective is to develop an integrated assessment system for green building products as part of the overall green building assessment system. This revision to the assessment system is expected to lead to continual professional development and to stimulate industry development toward green building products’ design, innovation, and manufacture. This research adopt quantitative research method by comparing cost distribution, SGBP points distribution, embodied carbon, and environmental impact to the four major groups of building systems (architectural, M & E, structural, and external works). Assessment methods for the grading of green products in terms of their impacts and performance were examined. The results show that points shifting in GreenMark is needed to allow for a balanced distribution of points among the four major building systems. The proposed green building point allocate to the architectural system is 42%, for M&E system is 37%, for structural system is 14%, and the external works is 7% of the total points. The application of the new proposed point structure for the Green Mark certification system will contribute to a 19% reduction in points from the current energy efficiency points. These points are redistributed to architectural and structural work categories, each getting 15% and 4% of the points respectively.
