Abstract
The work described here demonstrates the usefulness of combining logical representations, reasoning and learning with numerical methods. While the latter have proved essential in enabling a robot to perform in the real world, symbolic methods are better suited to generalising over large classes of objects and behaviours. They provide more powerful planning and problem solving mechanisms and they are more easily explained than sub-symbolic methods.
