Abstract

The development of Indonesian shopping mall is rapidly growing, such as in the aspects of function, types and the building area, including in Surabaya, as the second biggest city in Indonesia. Tunjungan Plaza, a mall located in Surabaya which was designed with the adoption of western-based interior standard. The design considers the interior design criteria which fits the definition of shopping space, all from the aspects of function, shapes, sizes, and room athmosphere. In interior design, not only on its function, but there are also many contributing factors that are needed to be considered, such as the users factor along with its cultural values, which makes interior design more dynamic. The purpose of this research is to identify the relation between the cultural values of the mall visitors with the western-based designed shopping mall space. Whether or not the available spaces have been used as its functions. The results of the research shows that the social activity of the mall visitors are made of various activities that create spaces such as Culinary Tour Space, Hangout Space, Huddling Space and Gathering Space. Not every mall visitors use those spaces as its functions.
