Abstract

This paper describes the concept of energy efficient building design and three good practices which has been realized at Petra Christian University, Surabaya, Indonesia. The first priority, in the concept of energy efficient building, should use the passive environmental control, which maximizing the usage of building envelope (roof, walls, floors) and building elements (landscaping, accessories, doors, windows), to be designed carefully and accurately without electricity to achieve the thermal comfort and visual comfort of the buildings. Then the active environmental control as well as the hybrid environmental control can be implemented to gain greater energy efficiency usage.
Ir.Jimmy Priatman, M.Arch, an architect and senior lecturer of Petra Christian University has successfully build two energy efficient buildings, named Gedung Graha Pangeran (2002), belongs to BNI Bank which the energy usage is only 144 KWh/m2/year, and Gedung Graha Wonokoyo (2006), a privat company which its energy usage is only 88 KWh/m2/year. The energy usage of those two buildings are far below the minimum National Energy Efficient Index in Indonesia, which number is 200 KWh/m2/year.
Electronic keys for 22 class rooms has been installed at Petra Christian University since early 2009 gradually, yet this accessories don’t show significant reduction in energy consumption of the whole building.
Smart LED Lamp control has been accomplished as a model of active environmental control. By using pulse width modulation with frequency of 7.8 KHz the LED Lamp can be dimmed without flicker. The smart lamp will give additional illumination when the external light that comes into the rooms falls below the illumination standard of that particular room.
